This new £41M research lab with a clinical research facility was a joint venture between the University of Cambridge, Royal Papworth Hospital and with a major funding contribution from the British Heart Foundation.  The HLRI is situated next to Royal Papworth Hospital and forms part of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The project was on hold for 3 years and as a result when instructed, there was a requirement to review the design and improve the energy efficiency of the building.

This was achieved by carrying out detailed thermal modelling to develop a low energy design with minimal alterations to the original proposals.

Project Atria achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating and won the CFCI Award for Best New Building over £2M in 2022.
