All of these disciplines overlap and complement each other, enhancing our service and allowing us to close the performance gap in buildings, this being the gap between the design and actual performance of a building.

Low energy design and wellbeing in design is often not fully realised in the completed and operational building. Our Energy Engineers play an important role in ensuring the engineering design provides a comfortable and enriching environment and our Facilities Engineers ensure this is translated into the day to day running of the buildings ensuring they have low operational carbon and offer a comfortable and energy efficient environment.

As part of an established team, Engineers produce low energy, creative design solutions, to both scheme and detailed design level, including carrying out site inspections/surveys, preparing specifications and project reports and attending meetings. Our Engineers work across a variety of sectors such as Science & Research, Education, Commercial, Healthcare, and Heritage buildings.

We have offices throughout the UK and this national coverage allows us to provide a UK wide service and to support our national framework commissions.

Design engineering applicants are preferably degree qualified in an appropriate discipline (e.g. Mechanical, Electrical, Energy, Facilities or Building Services Engineering or similar) with a minimum of three years’ relevant experience in an engineering role within a building services context. Experience of working with relevant design software (IES, Revit, etc.) and on BIM projects would be an advantage.

Candidates would demonstrate strong technical and communication skills, personal confidence and the ability to engage directly with Design Teams and Clients. We encourage and support our Engineers to obtain Chartered Engineer status and have an established training and development programme that will be tailored to suit you.

Facilities candidates would have skills which support the effective management and operation of engineering services installations in the operational building. They would demonstrate strong communication skills and a willingness to learn from experience to provide a valuable service to our Clients. The role of a Facilities Engineer includes troubleshooting of operational issues, compliance awareness, condition surveys and reporting, energy auditing and energy reduction plans, and collaborating with Service Providers, Agents and Clients.

Graduate and Trainee Opportunities

We operate a Graduate recruitment and Graduate training programme and provide workplace experience for students. This programme includes an individual development plan for each Graduate providing standard and bespoke training to realise the agreed development plan.

Graduate recruitment is our preferred trainee route but we are open to apprenticeships and non-degree candidates who demonstrate the skills and motivation to become a valuable member of our team.

Continuing Professional Development

We encourage the professional development of all Staff and provide mentor support to achieve membership of relevant Institutes and, where possible, to achieve Chartered Engineer status.

We encourage knowledge sharing amongst all disciplines and are open to new developments and innovations in our sector.

Although we have offices throughout the UK we operate as a single business and all Engineers are encouraged to develop expertise in all disciplines and work on projects throughout the UK.

Energy Initiatives

We are committed to being an Industry Leader in Low Energy design and Low Energy-in-Use buildings and we actively encourage our Clients to commit to ongoing NABERS assessments, the rating system in relation to Energy-in-Use and Design for Performance. This initiative allows us to ensure all energy saving initiatives are considered and implemented and includes ongoing reviews every 12 months following project completion.

We have working relationships with LETI and the UKGBC and are engaged in a number of zero carbon pathway projects.

Our Energy Team are trained in NABERS and other energy reduction initiatives and ensure they are always up to speed with current regulations, undertaking courses and training as required.

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated Graduate Engineer to join KJ Tait’s Engineering Design team. This is an
excellent opportunity for a recent graduate who is keen to develop practical design experience, learn
from experienced engineers and contribute to meaningful projects across the built environment.

The successful candidate will support the wider Engineering Design team by assisting with
engineering designs, calculations, drawings, schedules, reports and technical documents. You will
work closely with senior colleagues, receive mentoring and gradually build the technical knowledge,
confidence and project awareness needed to progress in your engineering career.

KJ Tait provides integrated Engineering Design, Facilities Management and Energy Services, with
specialist expertise including BREEAM, NABERS, TM44 Air Conditioning Inspections and WiredScore

Key Responsibilities

Support Mechanical and Electrical engineering design work across a range of projects.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to join KJ Tait’s
Engineering Design team in London. This is an excellent opportunity for a talented engineer
with a strong technical background in building services design, mechanical systems and
multidisciplinary project delivery.

The successful candidate will support the wider Engineering Design team by providing
mechanical engineering designs, resolving technical engineering challenges, coordinating
design input and communicating clearly with clients, contractors, architects, manufacturers
and internal project teams. On smaller projects, there will also be opportunities to act as Lead
Engineer, supporting coordination, resource allocation and project management.

KJ Tait provides integrated Engineering Design, Facilities Management and Energy Services,

Key Responsibilities

Work within a Mechanical, Electrical engineering team, providing mechanical design and
technical advice across a wide range of projects.
Prepare detailed mechanical engineering designs, including drawings, specifications,
schedules, reports, calculations and technical documents.
Undertake site visits to monitor and report on progress against project specifications,
highlighting issues and supporting practical solutions.
Coordinate input from internal and external disciplines and specialist teams as required.
Correspond with clients, contractors, architects, manufacturers and other third parties
regarding technical queries and project information.
Delegate tasks to CAD/Revit Technicians and Junior Engineers where appropriate, reviewing
outputs and providing constructive feedback.
Attend design team, technical, coordination and progress meetings.
Monitor project progress against agreed design deliverables, costs and deadlines.
Support handover and commissioning processes, ensuring project requirements and
specifications are met.
Embed energy efficiency and sustainable design principles into mechanical design work
wherever possible.

About You

We are looking for a proactive, confident and detail-focused engineer who can work both
independently and as part of a team. You will have strong interpersonal skills, professional
manners and the ability to consistently produce high-quality work to agreed deadlines.

Essential Requirements

Preferably BEng, BSc or MEng qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services
Engineering or a related discipline.
Minimum 5 years’ experience in a mechanical design engineering role, ideally within building
services or MEP consultancy.
Professional membership, with a clear pathway towards IEng or CEng status.
Strong working knowledge of mechanical engineering design calculations, including U-values,
heat loss, heat gain, pipe sizing, pump sizing, duct sizing, fan sizing, psychometrics, control
valve sizing and thermal modelling.
Good understanding building regulations, particularly Part L and Part B and how compliance
is demonstrated through calculation.
Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit and model checking software.
Experience using mechanical design software
Working knowledge of NBS Chorus Specification Manager.
Experience with PDF review and mark-up software such as Bluebeam, Adobe or Foxit.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build positive working
relationships with clients and project teams.
Right to work in the United Kingdom.

Desirable Requirements

Previous experience acting as Lead Engineer on smaller projects or leading key project
elements day to day.
Experience mentoring or supporting the development of Junior Engineers or Technicians.
Understanding of BMS systems and low-energy design strategies.
Knowledge of BREEAM, NABERS, TM44 Air Conditioning Inspections or WiredScore
Assessments.
Familiarity with ISO quality management systems and quality assurance procedures
