About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Mechanical Design Engineer to join KJ Tait’s
Engineering Design team in London. This is an excellent opportunity for a talented engineer
with a strong technical background in building services design, mechanical systems and
multidisciplinary project delivery.
The successful candidate will support the wider Engineering Design team by providing
mechanical engineering designs, resolving technical engineering challenges, coordinating
design input and communicating clearly with clients, contractors, architects, manufacturers
and internal project teams. On smaller projects, there will also be opportunities to act as Lead
Engineer, supporting coordination, resource allocation and project management.
KJ Tait provides integrated Engineering Design, Facilities Management and Energy Services,
with specialist expertise including BREEAM, NABERS, TM44 Air Conditioning Inspections
and WiredScore Assessments. Our approach focuses on delivering low-energy, high-quality
projects and closing the performance gap between design intent and real-world building
performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Work within a Mechanical, Electrical engineering team, providing mechanical design and
technical advice across a wide range of projects.
- Prepare detailed mechanical engineering designs, including drawings, specifications,
schedules, reports, calculations and technical documents.
- Undertake site visits to monitor and report on progress against project specifications,
highlighting issues and supporting practical solutions.
- Coordinate input from internal and external disciplines and specialist teams as required.
- Correspond with clients, contractors, architects, manufacturers and other third parties
regarding technical queries and project information.
- Delegate tasks to CAD/Revit Technicians and Junior Engineers where appropriate, reviewing
outputs and providing constructive feedback.
- Attend design team, technical, coordination and progress meetings.
- Monitor project progress against agreed design deliverables, costs and deadlines.
- Support handover and commissioning processes, ensuring project requirements and
specifications are met.
- Embed energy efficiency and sustainable design principles into mechanical design work
wherever possible.
About You
We are looking for a proactive, confident and detail-focused engineer who can work both
independently and as part of a team. You will have strong interpersonal skills, professional
manners and the ability to consistently produce high-quality work to agreed deadlines.
Essential Requirements
- Preferably BEng, BSc or MEng qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services
Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a mechanical design engineering role, ideally within building
services or MEP consultancy.
- Professional membership, with a clear pathway towards IEng or CEng status.
- Strong working knowledge of mechanical engineering design calculations, including U-values,
heat loss, heat gain, pipe sizing, pump sizing, duct sizing, fan sizing, psychometrics, control
valve sizing and thermal modelling.
- Good understanding building regulations, particularly Part L and Part B and how compliance
is demonstrated through calculation.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit and model checking software.
- Experience using mechanical design software
- Working knowledge of NBS Chorus Specification Manager.
- Experience with PDF review and mark-up software such as Bluebeam, Adobe or Foxit.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build positive working
relationships with clients and project teams.
- Right to work in the United Kingdom.
Desirable Requirements
- Previous experience acting as Lead Engineer on smaller projects or leading key project
elements day to day.
- Experience mentoring or supporting the development of Junior Engineers or Technicians.
- Understanding of BMS systems and low-energy design strategies.
- Knowledge of BREEAM, NABERS, TM44 Air Conditioning Inspections or WiredScore
Assessments.
- Familiarity with ISO quality management systems and quality assurance procedures
