CFP Architects

KJ Tait were appointed by CFP Architects to carry out an assessment of the daylight available to the residential buildings within the vicinity of a proposed new hotel, an extension to an existing hotel and residential development located in a gap site behind Jeffrey Street in the old town of Edinburgh.

The project consisted of the provision of:

  • Vertical Sky Component Calculation to the existing residential properties and adjacent care home.

The sloping nature of the site and the close proximity of adjacent existing buildings presented modelling challenges, but using various sections provided by the Architect, we managed to model the site accurately and presented the findings to City of Edinburgh Council as part of the successful planning submission.

The proposed extension will involve the construction of a new 7 storey plus roof hotel and a 7 storey plus roof extension to the existing Jurys Inn hotel. As part of the hotel extension, two new 7 storey residential blocks are proposed, accessible from Chalmers Close.

The development will also include new pathways and circulation areas between the buildings and streets.

The north of the site is the existing hotel, to the east is an events venue, to the south is a mixture of commercial shops, residential buildings, commercial accommodation and public houses and restaurants and to the west there is a property management company, a church and residential properties which are unaffected by the development.
