The Royal Cambridge Hotel occupies the buildings forming 6-12 Scroope Terrace, a Grade II listed Georgian terrace within the City Conservation Area. Comprising lower ground, ground, 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors, the project involves the regeneration of the existing hotel, including full refurbishment of existing buildings and a new build extension, to provide a 4-star boutique hotel.
The works include ensuring the hotel has full mechanical ventilation, heating and cooling. Energy efficiency and carbon reduction measures have been applied wherever appropriate, bearing in mind the heritage nature of the building and its use as a commercial hotel. The design follows the energy hierarchy where passive and active design measures were maximised to enhance the performance of the existing building fabric. A low and zero carbon technologies appraisal of the design was completed to inform the design strategy.
Heat pump technology has been adopted wherever possible in the design, making use of the benefits in efficiency provided and moving the building’s operational energy use over to a lower carbon intensity fuel source. It is proposed to use heat pump technology to meet the majority of the domestic hot water demand to the hotel.
