Hygiene in Ductwork Systems and Effective Cleaning Options

Hygiene in ductwork systems is crucial for maintaining indoor air quality and ensuring the efficient operation of HVAC systems.  

 

Over time, ductwork can accumulate dust, debris, mould, and other contaminants, which can circulate throughout a building, posing health risks to occupants and reducing system efficiency.  

 

Poor duct hygiene can lead to respiratory issues, allergies, and other health problems.  Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to prevent the build up of these contaminants and to ensure that the HVAC system operates effectively and efficiently. 

 

Effective cleaning options for ductwork systems are outlined in the “TR19 guidelines” which is published by ‘BESA (The Building Services Engineering Association) and is widely recognised as the industry standard for ventilation system hygiene and emphasises the importance of thorough inspections, regular cleaning schedules, and proper documentation.  

 

Cleaning methods may include manual brushing, air washing, and vacuuming using high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters to capture and remove contaminants.  In addition, chemical treatments and sanitisers can be used to eliminate microbial growth.  Adhering to TR19 ensures that cleaning is performed to a high standard, minimising health risks and maintaining optimal performance of HVAC systems.
