This complex project involves the conversion of the Grade II listed Chapel and adjacent six storey Minister’s House on Shaftesbury Avenue to provide a new centre for performance art. The project includes the main theatre, which can accommodate up to 200 occupants over two levels, an 80-cover basement level restaurant with separate private dining area, bar, actors’ changing rooms, offices and a separate small training theatre, the Actor’s Green Room.
The engineering servicing of this listed building is particularly complex, requiring all plant and distribution systems to be carefully integrated to maximise the use of roof voids and back-of-house spaces, including incorporating service risers into previously oversized stairways.
The engineering services design challenges had to meet strict acoustic criteria required for a theatre environment. Our scope included liaison and integration of specialist performance lighting, performance sound systems and audio visual systems.
