The University of Glasgow, Stevenson Building

Glasgow

The new Stevenson Hive building is located on the site of the Hive Nightclub and interconnects with the existing B-Listed Glasgow University Union (GUU) and Stevenson buildings to form a combined sports and leisure hub. The buildings are located at the eastern edge of the University’s Gilmorehill Campus and form an important “gateway” into the University campus for those approaching from the city centre.

Located adjacent to the grade B listed Glasgow University Union and within the Glasgow West Conservation Area the design demanded a subtle approach to ensure it sat comfortably in its surroundings and obtained planning approval. This was achieved through the study of surrounding window proportions, feature ‘chimneys’ to re-create the repetition of the tenement chimneys nearby and the top floor of the building set-back to reduce the overall mass and tie the main building lines in with the GUU next door. The building is located on a main thoroughfare through the University campus therefore the planning department requested activation on the front façade of the building.

The new extension comprises a five-storey building rising from a stone plinth to provide:

  • Two night clubs & two cafes
  • Cardiovascular and muscle conditioning suites
  • A double height sports hall and a viewing gallery

Coordination and design intelligence between the project team has been critical to make sure the site’s restricted accessibility and interfaces with adjoining buildings were effectively managed.

The project has achieved BREEAM Excellent.
