KJ Tait Engineers were the BREEAM Assessors for Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) new industrial units based in Hatston, Orkney, which were HIE’s first BREEAM Excellent Buildings.

Orkney Hatston was assessed under BREEAM 2008 Industrial and completed during 2012, with BREEAM Excellent awarded. The project involved six new industrial units intended for use by the renewable energy sector in Orkney. The site was based on an industrial site next to Hatston Pier, Kirkwall and the six industrial units comprise workshops, storage and office accommodation.

The main factors influencing the high BREEAM award were: air source heat pumps used to reduced CO2 emissions and improve the low or zero carbon technology score, natural ventilation, improved landscaping and biodiversity to the site, sustainable materials, efficient building services and cyclist facilities.
