The Thistles Shopping Centre was constructed in 1975 and had become dated, initiating this extensive refurbishment.
The Centre comprises some 50 shop units with Marks and Spencer, Debenhams and BHS providing anchor stores. The mall environment was significantly improved by the addition of extensive glazed roof lights, new flooring, new finishes throughout and links to the adjacent Marches Shopping Centre. All services were installed in full compliance with all current legislation and codes of practice; life safety systems in particular were the subject of comprehensive testing and demonstrations.
The project was a commended finalist in the British Council of Shopping Centres Awards.
KJ Tait Engineers was also commissioned for the subsequent BT Extension Project, which completed the links between The Thistles and The Marches, providing continuity and synergy throughout the composite Centre.
