KJ Tait Engineers provided full MEP design services for the new £8m multi-use Community Centre at the Clay Farm development in Trumpington, Cambridge. The new building accommodates 20 social housing units, a GP healthcare facility with minor surgery suite, public library, community café, community hall, a touchdown space for local authority and Police staff, a range of flexible meeting rooms and spaces for community and social activities. The scheme was funded by Cambridge City Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, Cambridgeshire Police and Bedfordshire Pilgrims Housing Association. The building also contains accommodation for NHS Cambridgeshire and Trumpington Street Medical Practice.
The Clay Farm building uses combined heat and power (CHP) plant to generate low-carbon electricity and utilise the balanced load profile in the building. Extensive use is made of natural ventilation and a PV array contributes to on-site electricity generation. The building meets BREEAM Excellent and Code for Sustainable Homes level-4.
